Prevention is equal to Prevention

Prevention means taking measures to avoid problems. In many areas of medicine, it is taken for granted—for example, the oral polio vaccine or cancer screening.

In dentistry, too, there are preventive measures against tooth decay and gum disease (periodontitis). Unfortunately, most patients are still far too unaware of this.

Here are a few figures

Tooth decay and periodontitis are the number one widespread disease and the most common diseases of all—not just of the teeth:

95%
of the population are infected and carry the pathogens
36%
Only this many 6-year-olds have healthy teeth
13%
Of the population aged 14 and older, [number] wear full dentures

Yet today, tooth decay and gum disease are nearly 100% preventable. Let's work together to make sure that happens.

Treatment at the Kilchberg Practice

Tooth decay and periodontitis are Infectious Diseases

Numerous scientific studies clearly show that tooth decay is a bacterial infectious disease caused, among other things, by Streptococcus mutans bacteria. Everyone carries these transmissible bacteria.

For example, they are passed from mother to child, which explains the family-specific prevalence of tooth decay. The goal is therefore to reduce these bacteria through your cooperation and through special preventive programs at our practice.

Dental hygiene procedure

Everyone has different needs, and we tailor our approach to each individual. Generally, a session follows a three-step process.

1
Examination of the Teeth and GumsWe always start with an examination. Once a year, we also calculate the Periodontal Screening Index (PSI): a quick procedure that measures the depth of your gum pockets to determine the condition of your periodontal tissue on a scale from 0 (healthy) to 4 (severely diseased). Depending on the severity, we plan further treatment and the intervals between appointments.
2
Gentle Cleaning and PolishingNext, we remove hard and soft plaque from the tooth surface using hand instruments as well as ultrasonic and powder jet devices. Finally, we polish the teeth to a high gloss using special polishers, which makes it more difficult for bacteria and plaque to reattach.
3
Customized TrainingFinally, you will receive personalized instruction: important tips on daily oral hygiene, information about potential problem areas, and answers to your questions.
⏱

As you can see, we take our time to do a thorough job, and that takes time. Please set aside about 60 minutes one.
